Indonesian Government Targets 20 Percent Export Increase to Non-Traditional Markets

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry and Trade is trying to increase non oil and gas exports this year by seeking market opportunities in non-traditional countries.

The government has targeted an export increase of 20 percent during 2004.

According to National Export Development Board Head, Diah Maulida, the export value from Indonesia to non-traditional countries has only reached 30 percent from its potential.

“Indonesia’s exports are usually targeted to countries like USA, Japan, and ASEAN,” Maulida stated while speaking about exhibition activities in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Thursday (15/4).

During 2003, the total value of Indonesia’s non-oil and gas products reached US$47 billion.

The Indonesian Government has targeted an increase of seven percent.

“The value should reach US$50 billion in 2004,” stated Maulida.

She added that among non-traditional market countries targeted by Indonesia were Middle Eastern, African, South American and Eastern European countries.

Maulida considered the plan to hold an exhibition of Indonesia’s products in UAE would be perfect to open market access in Middle East countries.

“The position of UAE is very strategic as it has become the biggest trade center in the area,” she said.

Last year, Indonesia held a similar exhibition in Sharjah in which the transaction value reached US$9 million.

The Indonesian products that attracted buyers included agricultural products, furniture, textiles and garment accessories, rubber and metal products, wood products, crafts, construction materials, electricity and electronic equipment, household equipment, sandals, shoes, toys, and medicines.
